Shining Star Doodles website design on desktop and mobile

Puppy applications post-launch

Project Overview

Shining Star Doodles needed a website redesign and brand refresh to address UX issues causing a high bounce rate and a form that wasn't converting puppy applications. The owners appeared to have well-bred doodles and a clear care philosophy; but the website was actively working against them.

The Challenge

The previous site had text layered over images throughout (a readability and accessibility failur). Inconsistent margins and padding disrupted scroll flow. A 'recommended products' section failed to load images reliably. The navigation bar text was set to white, making it invisible on every page except the homepage. The application forms were confusing and chaotic. Multiple compounding issues combined to drive bounce and kill conversions.

Previous Site Design

User Experience Strategy

Every issue was documented in Figma before a single design decision was made. ADA color contrast failures were mapped. UX flow issues were identified page by page. The broken image section and invisible nav text were flagged as critical-priority fixes. The form chaos was analyzed to understand what information was actually needed versus what was overwhelming users unnecessarily.

Website Design & Build

We needed to fix the following site issues:

  • Navigation
  • Form failures
  • User-flow

Their previous site relied on large images and text overlays. This lead to poor readability. Users want to see the dogs, absolutely, but it's better to showcase them clearly on the website rather than background. Not to mention the readability issues this causes.

I tightened up the color palette for readability purposes and created a site that felt more professional and less like a gallery or a portfolio.

With the form fixed, the navbar visible and working, their application rate went up.

The Outcome

The site launched in September 2025. One litter has been fully adopted since launch and the remaining litters are showing high applicant volume. The UX fixes that seemed small: invisible nav text, broken image sections, chaotic forms - were quietly costing the business real applications.
